Vector Control Field Supervisor Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito & Vector Control District, California, United States
Abstract: The continued spread of Aedes aegypti in Sacramento and Yolo counties since its initial detection in 2019 has prompted the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District (District) to pursue new strategies for mitigating this invasive vector and protecting public health. In May 2024, sterile insect technique (SIT) using Wolbachia-infected male Aedes aegypti became a viable control option in California. The District partnered with MosquitoMate, a Kentucky-based company holding a Wolbachia-related patent, to develop and implement an SIT release campaign within the District’s service area.
A neighborhood in the Natomas area of Sacramento was selected for this pilot project based on consistent annual increases in Aedes aegypti detections. In preparation for the initial releases in July 2024, the District conducted an extensive public outreach and media campaign to inform and engage the community.
This presentation will summarize the planning and execution of the campaign, describe public reception to the releases, present preliminary trapping and surveillance data, and offer reflections on the sustainability and potential refinement of future SIT operations.
