Abstract: Vector surveillance is critical to understanding mosquito abundance, species diversity, and distribution. When fast and reliable surveillance data is available, mosquito control programs can effectively optimize interventions and assess impact. Acquisition of surveillance data through traditional trapping requires significant labor, taxonomic expertise, and logistical management to deploy traps daily, retrieve specimens, and sort, identify, and record specimen data. This presentation reports on recent advancements of the Scout smart trap, which reduces the time and effort it takes to acquire species surveillance data. The system uses AI algorithms known as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), which can determine the species of mosquito in an image. The Scout trap immobilizes and images mosquitoes as they enter a trap, extracts abundance and species data from the images, and transmits the information to a web dashboard in real time. This presentation will describe applications as they relate to sterile and incompatible insect technique (SIT/IIT), key takeaways from field testing, and new updates on a budget-friendly design.
