Abstract: Cape Cod Mosquito Control Project (CCMCP) was organized in 1930 and mandated to control mosquito populations in the 15 member towns for the health and comfort of our citizens and visitors. Managing mosquitoes in a constantly changing coastal environment can be challenging, especially when populations emerge from federal lands. Approximately 60,000 acres in CCMCP’s control area are located within federal lands including two national wildlife refuges and Cape Cod National Seashore. Work to manage mosquito populations within each of these properties is determined by their local administrative staff which results in differing thresholds for treatment and restrictions on methods that can be employed. A dune overwash in 2021 within Cape Cod National Seashore boundaries resulted in historically high populations of Ae. cantator and Ae. sollicitans which negatively impacted residents, visitors, and businesses. While mosquito control activity was previously prohibited in the area, this event promoted public outcry to allow control. The successful collaboration between CCMCP and Cape Cod National Seashore following this event has opened opportunities to obtain Special Use Permits for mosquito management in expanded areas within federal lands on Cape Cod.
