26 - Gene-ius Vector Control: Genetic Innovations for Protecting Public Health

Abstract: Maybe for the first time since the advent of insecticidal vector control, we are in the enviable position of having multiple novel vector control technologies coming through the product pipeline. In place of toxins, these new biological strategies are largely focused on manipulating insect genetics to reduce either the vector’s ability to transmit diseases or its abundance. Despite frequently clean safety profiles, the almost unlimited potential of genetic approaches for highly efficacious, species-specific and sustained vector management introduces new questions around environmental acceptability. From fully reversible self-limiting approaches to more persistent gene drives, the severity of the pest problem being addressed can determine the balance between benefit and risk.

As pioneers in this space, genetic insect control companies attempting to turn technologies into deployable products must therefore navigate a social, political and regulatory minefield where one wrong turn could set back or even prevent further progress across the category.
