63 - Simplifying Arbovirus Surveillance with BEVTU(TM): A Fast, Low-Resource, Low Plastic, Chip-Based Multiplexed RT-PCR Platform Compatible with Minimal Sample Prep

Abstract: VectorDx has developed BEVTU™, a novel, low-resource laboratory instrument that enables simplified, multiplexed endpoint RT-PCR detection of mosquito-borne viruses. Tailored for mosquito abatement districts (MADs) with constrained budgets, limited staffing, and minimal lab infrastructure, BEVTU streamlines molecular surveillance using the same sample preparation workflow as RAMP testing. The process requires only three steps—vortexing, brief centrifugation, and buffer treatment with heat inactivation—followed by chip-based multiplex RT-PCR and automated result calling. Minimal laboratory experience is required for BEVTU operation, in line with current availability across lower-funded MADs and smaller county and city health departments.

Validation studies across multiple MADs have confirmed >85% concordance between BEVTU endpoint results and traditional lab-based qRT-PCR assays for key arboviruses including WNV, SLEV, EEEV, and WEEV. Notably, BEVTU shows more favorable alignment with qRT-PCR than RAMP, which often presents challenges in concordance. This positions BEVTU as a practical and scalable alternative for districts seeking reliable molecular diagnostics without the complexity or cost of conventional platforms.

BEVTU is currently the only commercially available multiplex PCR system offering results for up to six viruses per panel, plus two controls at under $50.00 per test. The initial panel includes WNV, SLEV, WEEV, EEEV. Subsequent products planned include several other viruses like La Crosse Encephalitis Virus, and Jamestown Canyon Virus, and tropical panels with Zika virus, CHIKV, DEN 1–4 typing, and plasmodium speciation. Tick-borne virus panels are also under exploration.

By reducing technical barriers and operational complexity, BEVTU represents a significant step forward in democratizing access to molecular diagnostics for vector surveillance. It enables districts to expand virus detection capacity with minimal training, space, or cost—supporting more equitable, proactive, and scalable public health responses.
