Professor
NC State University, North Carolina, United States
Dr. R. Michael Roe is a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor in the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina, USA; a fellow of the Entomological Society of America; and a fellow of the US National Academy of Inventors. His Ph.D. is in Entomology from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA with a minor in Nuclear Science, and he was a NIH Postdoctoral Fellow in Cellular and Molecular Biology in the Department of Entomology at the University of California, Davis, California, USA. The Roe laboratory has two major research goals: (i) the study of vector important arthropods, including chiggers, ticks, filth flies, sand flies and mosquitoes and their impact on human health; and (ii) improvement of agricultural production for food and fiber. To achieve these goals, the strategy is to conduct basic research on arthropod function and their relationship with the environment, and then use this knowledge for public benefit either by the dissemination of new information (scientific papers and to the public media), commercial development of technology to improve plant health and the human and animal condition, and to improve public/private decision making. His research approaches include RNA seq, genomics, microbiomics, proteomics, biochemistry, chemistry, arthropod biology, bioassay, AI, and applications in the material sciences including industrial minerals, textiles and nuclear science. He has published more than 346 scientific papers; produced several books including Reviews in Toxicology, Herbicide Toxicology, Biology of Ticks I and II, and the Dictionary of Toxicology; trained as a committee chair 52 graduate students; produced over 50 patent publications; and has taken several products to the market through university licensing agreements and 4 startup companies active today. His most recent commercial product is the first natural, US EPA registered mosquito and tick repellent, Mimikai.
