Graduate Research Assistant
Western Carolina University, North Carolina, United States
My name is Julie Cadigan and I am a second year masters student and a Graduate Research Assistant with the biology department at Western Carolina University. My research area is primarily in taxonomy and systematics with a focus on ontophylogenetics, allometry, miniaturization, and adapting total evidence analyses for use in phylogenetic comparative methods. I began working with Dr. Byrd at WCU as a summer technician assisting one of his graduate students, Mitch Mullin, with his thesis work as well as participating in WCU's aedes surveilance. It was during this time I began learning about Wyeomyia mosquitoes and the complexity of Culicid taxonomy. It has been fascinating learning how to handle material in a different system, especially in regards to viewing nomenclatural procedure through the lense of a public health standpoint. I began working with Dr. Byrd and Dr. Zavortink on describing a new Wyeomyia species towards the end of my internship, and have been working to adapt methods used in beetle taxonomy and microscopy/imaging techniques for use with mosquitoes.
