Sonja Swiger is a Professor/Extension Specialist with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. She received her PhD and Master of Science degrees from the University of Florida in 2007 and 2003, respectively, and her Bachelor of Science degree from Bethany College, WV in 2001. Sonja joined Texas A&M AgriLife Extension in the fall of 2008 as an Extension Specialist in Livestock/Veterinary Entomology. With AgriLife Extension, Sonja is responsible for adult educational outreach and research projects state-wide related to livestock/veterinary entomology and serves as the Extension contact for mosquito issues.
Sonja assists with planning and conducting education programs in pest management of arthropods and diseases attacking livestock, companion animals and public health. She also assists the public and county agents by addressing all insect related issues and questions. Sonja has developed several educational materials and programs to better educate and serve Texans in regard to mosquito borne diseases and is the lead on outreach education in the state.
Sonja is an active member of ESA (Entomological Society of America), SWB-ESA (Southwestern Branch of ESA, AMCA (American Mosquito Control Association), TMCA (Texas Mosquito Control Association) and the LIWC (Livestock Insect Workers Conference. Sonja has given over 660 program presentations on insects pests of cattle and public health concern and insect management, published 31 Extension publications, and 10 peer reviewed journal articles in the Journal of Economic Entomology, Neotropical Entomology, Pest Management Science, Journal of Medical Entomology and Journal of Dairy Science.
