Makayla Humphrey is a current graduate student in the Master's in Science - Biology program at Western Carolina University. Her thesis research involves clarifying the phylogeny and taxonomy of Lampyrid genera native to South America. She conducts this research under the bold guidance of her research advisor, Dr. Luiz Lima Da Silveira. Though her main research interests are in fireflies, she joined the WCU Mosquito and Vector-borne Infectious Disease Lab (PI: Dr. Brian Byrd) to assist in regular mosquito surveillance during the 2025 mosquito season, and to assist her fellow graduate student Mitch Mullin in field work for his master's thesis.
