92 - Managing Salt Marshes for Mosquito Control: A Historical and Operational Perspective from Indian River County

Abstract: In the 1920s, the goal in Florida was to eradicate saltmarsh mosquitoes to promote economic development. Although early efforts focused on ditching, dredging, and draining the salt marshes, it would later be determined that the flooding of these areas would be most effective in preventing oviposition. Accordingly, over 2,600 acres of salt marshes were impounded in Indian River County between the late 1950s through the 1960s.

Through the years, the methodology of wetland management has been modified to consider other factors such as wildlife usage, habitat success, and environmental stewardship. This presentation will focus on the historical approaches taken by Indian River County, the many changes implemented over the years, and the methodology utilized today to ensure sustainability of the fragile wetland ecosystem.
