Vector Control Amid the Ongoing ICE Raids in Los Angeles County: Lessons Learned from the Past
Following recent raids by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District (GLACVCD) has faced significant challenges in maintaining public health through mosquito control. Serving a diverse population of nearly six million residents across 36 cities and unincorporated areas spanning over 1000 square miles, GLACVCD is dedicated to providing ongoing mosquito and vector control for its residents.
Initial encounters with ICE activity began in 2009 and peaked in 2015, highlighting critical lessons regarding navigating these ICE raids and our public health initiative. These events emphasized the importance of community trust and collaboration with our District. Strategies were implemented to foster community engagement and communication with affected communities, ensuring that mosquito control remains a priority despite heightened tensions.
However, the ICE raids that began in June 2025 presented a new set of challenges, including widespread protest, civil unrest, and temporary suspension of operations in multiple areas. This presentation will explore the challenges faced, the strategies developed, and the valuable lessons learned in the past, which we use to navigate the ongoing ICE raids in Los Angeles County.
