48 - Counting Smarter: Unlocking Mosquito Data with the BG-Counter App

Abstract: Mosquito surveillance has traditionally relied on methods that have changed little in over 60 yr, limiting temporal resolution, spatial coverage, and scalability. A drastically new tool for mosquito surveillance became available in 2017, when Biogents released the BG-Counter, the first commercially available smart trap. Together with the BG-Counter app, it enables automated, high-frequency monitoring and fleet-level device management.

The original BG-Counter app had limited data visualization possibilities, and settings, such as for example changing of CO2 schedule had to be done on a trap-per-trap basis. With a change of the user profile (more customers with a relatively high number of BG-Counters), we have developed a new app that covers the needs of large fleets. We illustrate workflows for multi-trap administration, data quality control, and data analyses, including temporal trends, and map-based overview.

As surveillance scales, tools must shift from single-device views to fleet-level analytics. The new BG-Counter app modernizes mosquito monitoring and delivers actionable insights for data-driven vector control.
